Wednesday Challenge….
Here, I am taking the jump……bkm
The Proposal
against a sky of orange and grey
the day now comes to rest
I gather up my hopes and dreams
mark, tomorrow’s happiness
what laughter will I hold tonight?
what measure will I give?
to all the words you spoke today
that now grant me reason – live
as the tempest of my younger steed
has past from gale to calm
with only spring to summer felt
in your most sweet and subtle arms
must you lend me take my heart
to cast its dream agains’t new day?
beg, first let me take to glove and knee
and carry your heart, My Love… away…..
bkmackenzie 2010
This is *so* romantic! Very much in the spirit of Keats ‘La Belle Dam Sans Merci’ (one of my absolute favorites btw).
When you hit this part, I choked and then I was just swept away,
“to all the words you spoke today
that now grant me reason – live”
thank you so much Jodi….I love the Romantic’s – do wish they wish back in style…. I have a piece that starts -” give me Barrett and Browning, Shelly, Keats and the Lord…..” glad you enjoyed it…bkm
Yes, I’d like to read that piece. I’m an absolutely adorer of the romantic period. In fact, I bought this book at an antique store here in Texas over a hundred years old called ‘French Medieval Romances’ by Marie De France (translated by Eugene Mason). She recalled the old Lays (tales or songs) the minstrels used to play, so by memory she wrote this book, so the words will never be forgotten (this is way back in 1175). She says, ” Those to whom God has given the gift of comely speech, should not hide their light under a bushel, but should willingly show it abroad. If a great truth is proclaimed in the ears of men, it brings forth fruit a hundred fold; but when the sweetness of the telling is praised by many, flowers mingle with fruit upon the branch.”
It is absolutely fascinating and lovely. She has this way of saying every thing (hot and steamy) that needs to be said, in the most innocent of manners. In one of her ‘lays’ she even speaks of chastity belts! Ha. And they say they didn’t originate until the 15th century. Well, this was way back in 1175. Someone didn’t read the french midevil romances. 😉
uhhh.. sorry about the long comment. ;-D I like talking books.
Get out! I love Keats’ La Belle Dame Sans Merci as well, and just read it again, like yesterday!
Weirdness. Well, you’ve got the vibe going on Tim. Have you seen the La Belle Dame Sans Merci painting by Frank Dicksee? http://www.illusionsgallery.com/LaBelle-Dame-Dicksee-L.jpg
Beautifully done! Very romantic indeed.
thank you lisa, I do love romance……bkm
Do you guys know the Galway Kinnell poem about Shelley? I was kind of obsessed with it after reading a lengthy Bysshe Shelley bio. I’ll try to find it.
Jodi….you will find the poem here…..

Just beautiful.
“In serene drunkenness these words
will be my days, my nights, at will –
Escape me? Never –lost I would be
without my Beloved! While I am I,
and Elizabeth you are you -”
Well done. The intermingling of your thoughts the romantic poets is just gorgeous.
Thank you Jodi – for your kind words….. as always much appreciated…..bkm
