Ghosts of Giants

Ghosts of Giants

by Andrew Viertel in honor of Independence Day 2010

Dome and obelisk

The expanse of history

A flame burns on a hill

Wide stairs ascend to

Alabaster temples

Monuments to giants

Within marbled colonnades

Stern visages stare down

Sightless eyes behold

the heirs of their vision

Their words, etched in stone

Carried on the wind

Echo across the centuries

Thunderous whispers of a nation’s highest ideals

“We hold these truths to be self evident…”

“We here highly resolve…”

“We have nothing to fear…”

“Let the word go forth from this time and place…

“I have a dream…”

The ghosts of giants

Walk the city’s wide avenues

Floating over the mall and monuments

Spectral guardians to be summoned

In defense of a legacy sought but not yet fulfilled.

About Andrew

I'm a Christian, American, liberal, geeky, thoughtful, Northwest-transplanted Angeleno husband, father, and pundit who writes about anything he can think of.
